CADENZA
Guidelines
Cadenza is a quarterly magazine, publishing vibrant, modern short stories, articles, poetry, interviews and markets of interest to fiction writers every June, September, December and March. It's A5 format, perfect bound with a glossy cover, and there are approx 80-90 pages of content.
Co-editors John Ravenscroft and Zoe King, who took over from Jo Good in March 2003, are looking for:
* Short stories of up to 4,000 words
* Poetry of up to 40 lines
* Intelligent, well-written articles that appeal to fiction writers.
They welcome strong, innovative articles on all aspects of fiction writing, but don't want to see clichéd pieces about rejections, presentation and writer's block!
Articles can be up to 2500 words in length, but should be written in a succinct, economical style. The usual rules of manuscript layout apply. Only well presented typed/ word processed work will be considered. Submissions may be sent via email, but if sending snail-mail always include an SAE for a reply.
Readers and contributors are invited to send in letters on any aspect of fiction writing.
The poetry editor is Fiona Curnow. In 1995, Poetry Life Publishing brought out her first solo poetry collection, I Dreamed That Pigeons Came In Every Colour. She has also won a number of poetry competitions and was recently a prizewinner in The New Writer Poetry Awards. Please send poems on any theme of up to 40 lines to:
Fiona Curnow, The Poetry Editor (Cadenza), Homestead Cottage, 53 Assarts Road, Malvern Wells, Worcs WR14 4HW
When Jo Good started Cadenza, she was looking for unique ‘voices': writers who can produce crackling, vibrant prose and who aren't afraid to take risks. Inventive use of language is important, as well as original, arresting characters. John Ravenscroft and Zoe King are looking for the same thing.
Stories should be no longer than 4,000 words and should not have been published elsewhere or have been entered for current writing competitions.
Work should be typed on white A4 paper, double spaced with wide margins. The author's name and the title of the story should appear on each page, and all pages should be stapled together. A clear, easy to read typeface should be used (Arial or Times New Roman, Pt 12) and work should be available on disk. Email submissions are accepted.
A covering letter is also appreciated with very brief details about the author. All work should be accompanied by an SAE with correct postage. Payment is in voucher copies only at present.
A quarterly subscription costs £15.50 (£17 Eur/£20 RoW).
Please make cheques payable to: Cadenza.
