Wintry Thief

by Carol Rogers

caroge@live.co.uk

All season it lives in a dull set
of clothes; the carelessly bundled
jumper; the bulky scarf raised high,
hiding a sniffling nose.

Drags its wet boots over soiled
kitchen floors, through sticking,
swollen, flustered back doors.
Refusing to come clean, it shines
on grime.

More often, it bleats and drizzles,
dribbling bad news and dense-sky moods.
The thief that slopes off with
valuable time.

Loitering with intent for more than
half a year, outstaying the unwelcome
mat, threatening from behind its cloak
of pretty frost; maybe it will snow,
or maybe not.

Yet, some say, at least winter is
honest. Unlike summer; the master
of false promise.
