How to Win a Writing Competition
This isn't quite as hard as you think - honestly! One simple glance at the Competitions pages on my website, or a little research in writing magazines, will tell you that there are usually plenty of competitions running at any given time. So, to begin with, you nearly always have an ample supply. Once you've found one that suits you, take a little to time to plan what you're going to write about. Most competitions will give you a theme or a genre in which to write. The knack is in putting yourself in the judges' shoes for a moment before you begin. For example, if the theme is 'The Day Things Went Wrong', you can be pretty certain that the majority of submissions will concern tales of woe in one form or another and, after a time, these will all begin to sound the same to the judges. You need to write something that will stand out from the rest, something that will attract the judge's attention and will keep your story at the forefront of his mind. The first thing you thought of was almost definitely not the best. Try to think laterally - think different. Why not write a happy story?
