“Now be good
And don’t cry
When you go to school.”
I nodded,
Though wondered and wondered
Why I should.
Maureen Flowerday cried twice.
Frail and dishevelled
She held my hand by the sand
And we were friends -
Superglued all afternoon.
She contained her tears for a while,
Until they brimmed over
And touched the rest of her life.
